Measured neurophysiologically. Since 1985.
Dr. Günter Haffelder — physicist and psychologist, Institute for Communication and Brain Research Stuttgart — observed simultaneous synapse formation and hemispheric synchronisation in NATHAL® practitioners. Neuroscience did not recognise this phenomenon until twelve years later. The study is currently being replicated at Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena using state-of-the-art technology.
Interview with Dr. Haffelder & ZDF documentary.
The scientific interview and the contemporary ZDF documentary about Philippe Lathan’s NATHAL® method in full length.
On the measurements from 1985–1993 at the Institute for Communication and Brain Research Stuttgart.
Karl Schnelting, then Head of the ZDF’s Arts and Science Department (Germany’s second-largest TV broadcaster), decided—after completing the full Nathal training—to make a film about Nathal. This resulted in the film “Database Cosmos”.
Transcript of the interview with Dr. Haffelder
English transcription of an interview regarding the neurophysiological measurements performed on Philippe Lathan (then Philippe Evrard), based on the provided English transcription.
Interviewer: Which experiments were conducted in Weißenstein with Dr. Philipp Evrard (Lathan)?
Dr. Haffelder: A special characteristic of Dr. Philipp Evrard was that he attempted to change matter through thoughts, through a specific mental attitude. He tried to alter crystals and make mushroom cultures grow faster through his thoughts.

To this end, we connected him to the EEG and found that he generated very specific frequency patterns, which he allowed to pulsate. This means he was not only in a special state, but achieved a kind of hump-shaped pattern formation and repeatedly sent impulses towards these objects. And as we were able to determine later, something had changed.
From the perspective of brain activity, I can say that he was able to influence other things by first synchronising both hemispheres and simultaneously activating specific brain areas with a specific impulse at a certain frequency, which was superimposed on the normal brain frequency.
Interviewer: What is special about Dr. Evrard when looking generally at the state in which he does these things? What distinguishes him from a normal brain?
Dr. Haffelder: When I measure Dr. Evrard (Lathan) under normal conditions, nothing distinguishes him from other people. Except when he puts himself into this special state. Then his brain additionally begins to vibrate in a higher octave, an octave that ordinary people normally cannot reach.
He activates the delta range very strongly, for example, by setting his impulses. Then he transitions into the theta range, in which he has a kind of pictorial imagination. And he combines this frequency with a beta level. This is, for example, something we repeatedly observe only in mediums: that they can combine theta and beta with each other.
An ordinary person cannot do this to this extent, with this intensity and this pulsation. With Dr. Evrard (Lathan), this is very, very pronounced.
Interviewer: What does that mean, put simply? Which areas does he connect?
Dr. Haffelder: For me, Dr. Evrard is a phenomenon. He can do two things. On the one hand, he can, as we say, establish contact with other levels. This is shown in the slow sine wave that occurs in his beta range and has a vibration frequency of one to three oscillations per hour.
This is a very slow wave, partly even slower than earthquake waves, but it is full of information. So far, we have not yet been able to decode these waves. We can now make them visible, but not yet decode them.
This is something that Dr. Evrard can trigger. At the same time, however, he can also influence objects, plants, and so on. There are specific brain regions that he activates very purposefully. Through this activation, he seems to gain access to these plant and mineral systems.
Interviewer: Could one also assume that he has access to other information levels?
Dr. Haffelder: When he has activated this slow sine wave, he has this access. So that is something very rare. As I said, we cannot decode them yet.
With Dr. Evrard (Lathan), something quite extraordinary occurred, of course. For example, he is able to write his scripts. With an ordinary medium who channels or enters other levels, I have to rely on their statements being somewhat accurate.
With Dr. Evrard (Lathan), on the other hand, I have the possibility to determine very precisely that the first symbol corresponds to this brain vibration, the second symbol to that one. I can therefore assign it very precisely. Scientifically, this means that I can compare similarities with similar brain vibrations and perhaps find a key to decoding this slow sine wave.
This too is something special for me, and I am very grateful that I was able to measure him. Because it brings us one step further in this field of research, which we previously had to pursue in a very subjective way. Through Dr. Evrard (Lathan), it becomes possible for us to decode this very objectively using these characters.
Interviewer: Have you ever encountered anything similar in other people?
Dr. Haffelder: Regarding this sine wave, yes, in very good mediums. But of course, as I said, that is very subjective.
Interviewer: When people hear the word medium, they often think of trance, of a state of unconsciousness. Is that also the case with him?
Dr. Haffelder: Yes, and that is another difference. Dr. Evrard can put himself into a trance, because this wave occurs even when he is speaking quite normally with me. So I can speak normally with him, and at the same time he can generate this slow sine wave. This means that he has contact with other levels while speaking and appearing completely normal.
Interviewer: So his waking consciousness is active in every phase?
Dr. Haffelder: Fully active, yes. He can solve arithmetic problems, he can talk to me about anything, and yet this sine wave continues to be present in him. I have not observed this in this form in anyone else.
It is also characteristic in the images that he shows a very clear pattern in the curves during his preparation. In the preparation phase, he goes into the lower alpha range, which becomes very clear and distinct on both sides, in both hemispheres. This can be seen very well in these images, together with peaks in the delta range.
We say: if there are such humps and peaks in the delta range, it means that he is absorbing energy. He establishes contact with other systems. We often find this in healers, in patients who are in contact with their healer, and in doctors. It is a kind of transmission channel. He can activate this very well during his preparation. But when he then jumps into this level, this sine wave begins.
Interviewer: Could you describe once more what these individual terms delta, theta, and alpha mean and what happens in the brain during them?
Dr. Haffelder: The beta rhythm is presumably the rhythm I am in right now while I am speaking, thinking, and perhaps a bit tense.
Alpha rhythm is a very relaxed rhythm in which I can absorb things very easily. It is also a rhythm that people try to achieve in yoga, this relaxed, receptive rhythm.
The theta rhythm is the rhythm in which I can imagine images with my eyes closed. So it is the rhythm of visualisation.
And the delta rhythm is normally the deep sleep rhythm. However, through our analyses, we have found that healers and mediums use this rhythm extensively to establish contact with other systems, with other living systems.
In this way, he succeeds in establishing synaptic connections between these higher brain regions.
And that is the extraordinary thing about this training; I have not experienced that anywhere else.

About the neurological measurements and the role of the cryptograms from the Nathal manuscript.
Historical neurophysiological documentation
Haffelder's 1994 reports provide a written record of EEG measurements during NATHAL training, including FFT spectral analyses and graphical recordings of both cerebral hemispheres.

Training-related changes. His March reports describe increasing alpha/theta activity and hemispheric synchrony, an unusually rapid progression in his assessment, and what he termed new "brain action profiles". He reported investigations over an extended period with different participants and similar profiles among advanced trainees.
Cryptograms and EEG. In October 1994, Haffelder reported that Philippe Lathan's cryptograms were digitized and linked in time with EEG patterns. He stated that mathematical analysis showed a high correlation and allowed specific brain-wave patterns to be associated with the written symbols.
These historical observations are not a modern independent validation. Their value lies in the documented measurements and specific, testable hypotheses for renewed research.
Original archival reports and EEG printouts are preserved and can be made available to researchers upon reasonable request.
Why repeat these experiments today?
The historical observations raise a testable question: can the EEG patterns described by Haffelder be reproduced under controlled conditions, and do they show systematic temporal relationships with Philippe Lathan's cryptogram production?
Modern high-density EEG, precise digital time synchronization, preregistered protocols and contemporary time-series analysis make it possible to reassess these observations with greater methodological rigor. Such studies would test the historical claims; their outcomes remain open.
Four frequency ranges. With NATHAL®, all of them at the same time.
In a normal waking state, alpha and beta dominate. Theta and delta are barely active. During a NATHAL® exercise, all four frequency bands can be measured simultaneously—combined with hemispheric synchronisation. A state that otherwise is only achieved after years of meditation practice.
Waking state vs. NATHAL® active.
What emerges on the EEG—on the left, the typical daytime state with dominant alpha and beta waves; on the right, the NATHAL® state with all four bands simultaneously active.

Three phenomena that occur in parallel.
The NATHAL® exercise does not produce a single effect, but an interplay — and it was precisely this interplay that was so surprising to neuroscience at the time in 1985.
Hemispheric synchronisation
The left and right hemispheres oscillate in sync. As a rule, they work offset—left analytically-sequentially, right associatively-spatially. During NATHAL®, both are active at the same time and phase-synchronised—a prerequisite that normally requires years of meditation practice.
New synapses in the adult brain
In 1985, Dr. Haffelder observed the formation of new synaptic connections during the exercises. Neuroscience did not recognise adult neuroplasticity as a generally valid phenomenon until twelve years later. At the time, this was a bold observation—today it is established doctrine.
Full cognitive capacity simultaneously
Analytical thinking (β), creative openness (α), associative networking (θ) and deep regeneration (δ) run in parallel. Usually, these states are mutually exclusive. It is precisely this parallelity that creates the method’s practical effect—information from “non-analytical” sources becomes accessible..
Four countries. One research question.
The current replication and continuation of the Haffelder measurements is running as a joint project between universities in Germany, Kuwait, India and Morocco/Algeria.
