Dr. Günter Haffelder — physicist and psychologist, Institute for Communication and Brain Research Stuttgart — observed simultaneous synapse formation and hemispheric synchronisation in NATHAL® practitioners. Neuroscience did not recognise this phenomenon until twelve years later. The study is currently being replicated at Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena using state-of-the-art technology.

Karl Schnelting, then Head of the ZDF’s Arts and Science Department (Germany’s second-largest TV broadcaster), decided—after completing the full Nathal training—to make a film about Nathal. This resulted in the film “Database Cosmos”.
Four frequency ranges. With NATHAL®, all of them at the same time.
In a normal waking state, alpha and beta dominate. Theta and delta are barely active. During a NATHAL® exercise, all four frequency bands can be measured simultaneously—combined with hemispheric synchronisation. A state that otherwise is only achieved after years of meditation practice.

Three phenomena that occur in parallel.
The NATHAL® exercise does not produce a single effect, but an interplay — and it was precisely this interplay that was so surprising to neuroscience at the time in 1985.
Hemispheric synchronisation
The left and right hemispheres oscillate in sync. As a rule, they work offset—left analytically-sequentially, right associatively-spatially. During NATHAL®, both are active at the same time and phase-synchronised—a prerequisite that normally requires years of meditation practice.
New synapses in the adult brain
In 1985, Dr. Haffelder observed the formation of new synaptic connections during the exercises. Neuroscience did not recognise adult neuroplasticity as a generally valid phenomenon until twelve years later. At the time, this was a bold observation—today it is established doctrine.
Full cognitive capacity simultaneously
Analytical thinking (β), creative openness (α), associative networking (θ) and deep regeneration (δ) run in parallel. Usually, these states are mutually exclusive. It is precisely this parallelity that creates the method’s practical effect—information from “non-analytical” sources becomes accessible..
Four countries. One research question.
The current replication and continuation of the Haffelder measurements is running as a joint project between universities in Germany, Kuwait, India and Morocco/Algeria.
